There is no right or wrong way to make porridge. It all depends on how you like it! Try these for starters!

Porridge Power (The Microwave Method)

For a real porridge break -"fast"!

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

You can prepare Flahavan's Progress Oatlets quickly and easily in a bowl using a microwave oven.
We recommend that you use a deep bowl and allow over an inch at the top of the bowl for the oats to expand, during the cooking process.

1. Blend a half-cup of Flahavan's Progress Oatlets in one cup of water (or milk) and mix in a deep bowl. Do not cover.

2. Microwave on High for 2 ½ minutes to 3 minutes. Cooking times vary according to microwave wattage.

Oven Wattage Cooking Time
800W (Category D): 2 ½ minutes
650W (Category B): 3 minutes

3. Leave to stand for 1 minute, stir briskly and serve.
4. Serve with fresh fruits such as strawberries.


Porridge "On the Hob"

Take time to enjoy the traditional Irish method.

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

1. Stir one cupful of Flahavan's Progress Oatlets into 2 ½ cupfuls of cold water/milk.
2. Bring to the boil and cook briskly for 3 minutes, stirring all the time.
3. Cooking time will be reduced if Oats are soaked overnight.
4. Serve with some honey or yogurt if desired.


Extra-Healthy Porridge

Use our Flahavan's Porridge Oats with 20% Added Bran for a real high-fibre porridge breakfast. Who said fast food can't be healthy?

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

 

1. Blend a half cup (40g) of our Flahavan's 20% Added Bran in one cup of water (or milk) and mix in a deep bowl. Do not cover.
2. Microwave on High for 2 minutes to 2 ½ minutes. Cooking times vary according to microwave wattage.

Oven Wattage Cooking Time
800W (Category D) 2 ½ minutes
650W (Category B) 3 minutes

3. Leave to stand for 1 minute, stir briskly and serve with a chopped banana.



Oatbran Porridge

Flahavan's Oatbran is particularly rich in soluble fibre which is helpful in lowering cholesterol as part of a low-fat diet. 

Serves 4 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's Oat Bran porridge
1. Stir one cupful of Flahavan's Oat Bran into 2 ½ cupfuls of cold water/milk.
2. Bring to the boil and cook briskly for 3 minutes, stirring all the time.
3. Serve with chopped banana and apple if you wish.

 

 

 



Traditional-Style Pinhead Porridge

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

250ml/8oz whole milk or water
2 tablespoons pinhead oatmeal
(A pinch of salt if you like - not too much!)
A dollop of double cream

Pour the cold milk on the raw oatmeal and leave covered in a cool place to soak overnight so it softens and swells. In the morning, transfer the mixture into a pan and heat slowly, stirring with a wooden spoon until the mixture boils, (approximately 20 minutes).
Remove from the heat and season with salt - and the double cream. 


Goldilocks Porridge

Suitable for Bears of all ages ! 

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

Cover one cupful of Flahavan's Progress Oatlets in boiling water to soak overnight.
1. In the morning add 1 cup of milk to the oats and cook for about 5 minutes. You may use a microwave if you prefer.
2. Serve with natural cane sugar sprinkled over the porridge. As an alternative you could use some honey. 


Spicy Porridge

Serves 4 x 40g servings

1 ½ cups apple juice
½ cup water
1/8 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 ¼ cups of Flahavan's Jumbo Oatflakes
¼ cups sweetened dried cranberries or raisins
¼ cup of low-fat milk
1 tablespoon brown sugar
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts

1. Mix the apple juice, water and salt in a medium sized saucepan, bring to the boil. 
2. Stir in oats and cranberries/raisins, reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in milk, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg, cook for 1 minute. 
3. Spoon into bowls and sprinkle with walnuts.
Microwave method:

1. Mix first 5 ingredients in a medium sized bowl and microwave at high for 4 minutes or until slightly thick, stirring after 2 minutes.
2. Stir in milk, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
3. Let stand, cover for 1 minute.
4. Spoon into bowls and sprinkle with walnuts. 



Hot Toddy Porridge

Not for the faint-hearted!

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

1. Stir one cupful of Flahavan's Progress Oatlets into 2 ½ cupfuls of cold water/milk.
2. Bring to the boil and cook briskly for 3 minutes, stirring all the time.
3. Cooking time will be reduced if Oats are soaked overnight.

Top up with a swirl of cream, sprinkle with demerra sugar (or brown sugar) with a generous tablespoon of whiskey mixed in.



Fruity Porridge

When you're feeling a little fruity!

Serves 2 x 40g helpings of Flahavan's porridge

1. Stir one cupful of Flahavan's Progress Oatlets into 2 ½ cupfuls of cold water/milk.
2. Bring to the boil and cook briskly for 3 minutes, stirring all the time.
3. Cooking time will be reduced if Oats are soaked overnight.
4. For a real treat add chopped dried apricots, dates, raisins, sultanas or prunes.
